Copenhagen, UN city

The UN Development Program (UNDP) considers expanding its presence in Copenhagen, UNDP Administrator William H. Draper III said in an interview with Development Today 15 years ago. (See DT 5-6/92)

UNDP was to expand its Copenhagen-based procurement agency IAPSO. The organisation also considered letting some of its assistance to Eastern Europe be coordinated from UNDP’s Copenhagen office.

The UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and United Nations Information Centre were already present in Copenhagen. The city was about to become an important UN centre.

Draper said he was sure that the expansion of IAPSO in Copenhagen would lead to more procurement from the Nordic countries. He noted that Danish trade with the UN system reached USD 31 million in 1991.

“Our experience is that we get more bang for the buck in many cases with Danish products. But Denmark is a small country with small companies. They don’t have the opportunity to sell worldwide."
