Disappointed at passive Nordic role in World Bank
While the Nordic countries are often considered to be in the forefront on environmental issues, they lag far behind in the World Bank, according to American environmentalists.
“We don’t know of one example where the Nordic countries have voted against a project in the World Bank on environmental grounds," US activists say to Development Today. (See DT 18/92)
The US Executive Director is far more active on environmental issues than his Nordic colleague, observers say. The US has abstained or voted against several projects because of environmental impacts, while the Nordics by and large follow Bank staff recommendations.
Recent projects where the Nordics voted in favour while the US protested include: Pak Moon Dam in Thailand, a power project in Malawi, and the Yacyreta Dam in Argentina.
