Social Democrats take helm in Denmark

DT 2/93 reports that the new Social Democrat coalition government in Denmark strengthens the aid portfolio by reinstating Danida as an automous agency.

Under the former government, Danida was dissolved and remained only in name with staff incorporated into the structure of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Development assistance became a function of the South Group. Now Danida is once again under separate management.

Parties in the coalition government advocate the rapid selection of new recipient countries for Danish aid. A likely first country to be announced is Burkina Faso.

Another upcoming initiative is the Mixed Credits Facility - a concession to Danish industry - which is expected to offer a grant element on contracts of 40-45 per cent.
