FINNIDA chief suspended from WIDER case

FINNIDA’s Director General Benjamin Bassin was accused of bad behaviour during a lunch with a candidate for the job of WIDER Institute Director.

As DT 5/93 reports, WIDER was already under scrutiny by Development Minister Toimi Kankaaniemi due to the institute’s alleged economic mismanagement. At an informal meeting with Keith Griffin, who was candidate for the position of WIDER Director, Bassin reportedly made derogatory comments about both WIDER at its out-going chief Lal Jayawardena.

Griffin was so offended that he withdrew his candidacy. But not before writing a sharp letter to the head of UN University, which WIDER is part of.

Needless to say, Kankaaniemi removed Bassin from the WIDER case, awaiting a UN internal audit of the institute. Finland contributed some FIM 300 million WIDER during the ten previous years.
