SIDA forces consultants to cut fees

In January 1993, the Swedish International Development Authority (SIDA) cancelled all its framework agreements with consultants in an attempt to lower consultant fees. (See DT 11/93)

According to the agreements, fees were automatically adjusted upwards every year according to a “consultancy price index". The Swedish economy had taken a hit and Sida took advantage of a sluggish consultancy market.

In June, SIDA told Development Today that all 27 consultants had declared that they were willing to work for less pay.
“We are happy with the results so far", said Inger Axell at SIDA. “The consultants have been very understanding".

Earlier, virtually all consultants were paid according to Sida’s maximum rate of SEK 700 per hour or more. The new agreements were mostly for under SEK 700 per hour.
