Statkraft, Vattenfall join forces for Laos hydro

A consortium of Nordic companies has signed an agreement with the government of Laos to build a hydropower plant at an estimated cost of USD 270 million. (See DT 14/93)

Norway’s Statkraft and Vattenfall of Sweden are the major partners in this Nordic group, which captured the contract for construction of the 210-megawatt Nam Theun 1-2 Dam Project.

The agreement is supported with aid financing from the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad) and the Asian Development Bank. Construction is to be completed in 1997.

Norad provided support for the pre-feasibility study as well as NOK 35 million for parallel financing of detailed plans for the project. Norconsult, with experience from the Xeset Hydropower Project in Laos, is viewed as a strong contender for this job.
