Danish support to UNDP. Growing Danish purchases

As the third largest individual donor to UNDP, Denmark provides 10 per cent of the agency’s budget. (See DT 15/93)

“You are the world’s leader now in development assistance," declared the new UNDP chief James Gustave Speth during a visit to Copenhagen in the fall of 1993. “I hope and pray that the rest of the world will follow your example."

Speth assured the Danish Development Minister Helle Degn that the upward trend in UN purchases in Denmark will continue. He also agreed that Danes are underrepresented on the agency’s staff.

Speth informed Degn that under his leadership UNDP would assume the central role in coordinating the UN System that it was meant to have.
