Major cuts in Norwegian aid to Tanzania
The Norwegian aid budget for 1995 indicates further cuts in aid to Tanzania. During 1992-5, aid has been reduced by almost 30 per cent.
Though Tanzania remains Norway’s main recipient of development assistance, the country frame for 1995 will be NOK 300 million, down NOK 40 million compared with 1994. In 1990, aid was at NOK 400 million. (See DT 18/94)
The Tanzanian brand of socialism, introduced by former President Julius Nyerere, made the country a favourite among aid officials and Social Democrat politicians in the Nordic countries and led to large infusions of aid.
But disappointment with the lack of results from these aid efforts, and a loss of faith in the efficiency of a centrally planned economy, has contributed to the view of Tanzania as a model of mal-development.
