PM Stoltenberg pushed G8 donors to cut vaccine subsidies to drug industry

At a key point in the negotiations with other donors, Norway threatened to pull out of the G8’s USD 1.5 billion project, the Advance Market Commitment, aimed at subsidising the provision of pneumococcal vaccine to poor countries.

Internal documents obtained by Development Today show that Norway felt the proposed deal had become too sweet for the drug companies; the price of vaccine was to be double the original estimate. Norway was prepared to exit the AMC if the vaccine price was not reduced.
