Tanzania corruption audit stamped secret

Development Today has been refused access to a new audit of the corruption-tainted Norwegian-funded natural resources programme in Tanzania. The Norwegian Embassy denies that it has sidelined the Danish Auditor who revealed massive corruption in the programme.

Though most areas in Swedish aid face dramatic cuts in next year’s budget, a few have been sheltered, among them bilateral aid to Africa, WFP and UNICEF. Sweden also steps up funding of democratisation and freedom of speech.

The GAVI vaccine alliance says the donors’ decision to drop the price of vaccines in the Advance Market Commitment - from USD 10 to USD 7 per dose - has no affect on the number of children’s lives that are saved. The AMC donors’ main expert advisor Ruth Levine agrees with GAVI. But the claim is disputed by Princeton University’s Adel Mahmoud.

The head of SADEV has blocked a recent proposal to investigate whether aid transferred via Swedish state agencies improves the agencies’ implementation of the Policy for Global Development.

At its general annual meeting, the members of the Danish NGO MS have voted to formalise the link to ActionAid. MS will become a full affiliate member of the international NGO federation by next year.

Six years after the Policy for Global Development was launched, Sweden still shows no interest in evaluating how the policy has been implemented.

Finland currently provides funding to two forestry programmes through Tanzania’s Forest and Beekeeping Division of the Ministry for Natural Resources and Tourism (MNRT): EUR 6 million to the National Forestry and Beekeeping Programme; and EUR 1.9 million to the National Forest Resources Monitoring and Assessment Programme.
