Høybråten to lead GAVI
Dagfinn Høybråten, Leader of the Norwegian Christian Democrat Party, has been elected Chair of the GAVI vaccine alliance.
Høybråten was Ministry of Health in Norway between 1997 and 2004. He has been on the GAVI Board since 2006, and succeeded Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg as an Independent GAVI Board Member last year.
Høybråten will be the third chair of the organisation. The departing Chair of GAVI is Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland. The first chair was former President of South Africa Nelson Mandela.
The new chair faces some of the toughest challenges in GAVI’s history in the coming year. GAVI needs to raise some USD 4 billion to finance an expansion of its vaccine programmes. A crucial pledging conference will be held in June 2011 for donors to make financial commitments.
