Strengthening geographical services in Laos

Finland has been supporting national geographic services in Laos since 2010, increasing the availability of aerial photography to two-thirds of the country.

But there is concern about the institutional sustainability of the project. There are outstanding questions related to policy issues on data sharing, product pricing.

The Foreign Ministry in Helsinki is now extending the project to ensure that the National Geographic Department and the Surveying and Mapping Centre in Laos have long term capability and financial means to produce and distribute good quality and up-to-date geospatial data.

The expected results are to develop policy and regulations to ensure sustainable production and distribution of reliable accurate geospatial data. In addition, the remaining Northern third of the country is planned to be flown within the extension of the project.

The deadline for submission of tenders is August 5, 2014.
