Finnish support to Tanzanian forestry

The current phase of Finnish support to the Tanzanian forestry sector expired in the middle of this year. The Foreign Ministry in Helsinki has designed the next phase of support and is currently commissioning an appraisal of the new programme.

The new intervention builds on more than 40 years of Finnish engagement in the sector. It focuses on sustainable forest management and value chain development.

The new intervention has been designed both to support Tanzania’s National Strategy for Economic Growth and Poverty Reduction and to take into account the Finnish development policy’s emphasis on protection of the environment and a human rights-based approach.

The purpose of the appraisal is to assess the programme design with regard to relevance, feasibility and sustainability, and to finalise the programme document.

A possible additional appraisal question is whether climate change issues have been properly integrated into the programme and whether the potential and role of the programme in REDD+ has been taken into consideration.

The deadline for the submission of tenders is December 7, 2015.
