Pushback from rights experts after aid-funded carbon certifier rejects first appeal from indigenous group

News November 13, 2023 / By: Ann Danaiya Usher

The forest carbon certifying body ART, which was until last year financed solely by Norway, has dismissed a complaint from an indigenous group about the first-ever issuance of credits to Guyana. Critics describe ART’s handling of the case as “deeply flawed” and say it falls short of international standards. ART, a newcomer in the field, claims to adhere to the carbon market’s highest standard on respecting indigenous rights.
