Private lending in development finance outperforms bond market, report shows

Business November 05, 2026 / By: Bjørn H Amland

New data shows that returns on private loans provided alongside development finance institutions (DFIs) and multilateral development banks are higher than in publicly traded emerging-market corporate bonds. These loans are also less vulnerable to global financial crises and have lower default rates. Experts tell Development Today that the newly released data could help expand private lending and reduce capital cost in frontier markets.

The new GEMS data shows that investing with development institutions has been profitable. Among the original investors in Lake Turkana Windmill Project in Kenya are the Nordic DFIs Norfund, Impact Fund Denmark and Finnfund. (Photo: Norfund)
